About Towerpackings

High-performance internals for efficient gas–liquid mass transfer

Tower packings are critical internals used in packed columns to enhance gas–liquid contact, improve mass transfer efficiency, and minimize pressure drop across a wide range of process applications.

What are Towerpackings

Tower packings are essential internals used in packed columns and process towers to enhance gas–liquid contact and improve mass transfer efficiency with minimal pressure drop. They are widely used in absorption, distillation, stripping, scrubbing, and heat-transfer operations across chemical and process industries.

In summary, the selection of tower packing geometry depends on process requirements such as efficiency, pressure drop, fouling tendency, mechanical load, and operating conditions. Traditional packings offer reliability and strength, while advanced designs provide higher efficiency and capacity for modern process demands.

Raschig Rings are the earliest and most traditional form of random tower packing. Their simple cylindrical geometry provides uniform void distribution and predictable hydraulic behavior. While robust and economical, they offer comparatively lower surface utilization and higher pressure drop than more advanced designs. They are widely used in general chemical services, high-temperature applications, and environments where mechanical strength and proven performance are prioritized.

Pall Rings represent an advanced development of the Raschig Ring, incorporating windows and internal structural elements within the cylindrical body. This design increases open area, enhances liquid distribution, and promotes improved gas–liquid contact. Pall Rings deliver higher capacity, lower pressure drop, and improved efficiency, making them suitable for high-throughput towers and revamp projects.

Berl Saddles are saddle-shaped random packings designed to improve flow distribution compared to plain rings. Their curved geometry reduces channeling and pressure drop while offering better surface wetting. Although more efficient than Raschig Rings, Berl Saddles are considered an intermediate solution and have largely been superseded by optimized saddle designs.

Intalox Saddles are a refined saddle design engineered for superior mass-transfer efficiency and hydraulic performance. Their symmetrical shape promotes even liquid spreading, high surface utilization, and low pressure drop across a wide operating range. They are widely preferred in absorption, stripping, and scrubbing applications.

Partition Rings are cylindrical packings internally divided into multiple compartments. The internal partitions increase effective surface area and enhance liquid redistribution compared to plain Raschig Rings. These packings provide a balanced improvement in efficiency while maintaining structural simplicity.

Honeycomb Bodies are structured packings consisting of parallel, straight-through channels arranged in a highly ordered matrix. Unlike random packings, honeycomb structures offer extremely low pressure drop and uniform flow distribution. They are primarily used in high-temperature gas treatment, heat recovery systems, catalytic supports, and regenerative thermal oxidizers.
